The second chapter of Pure Imagination from Utopia Records...

Utopia Records keeps pushing out melodic full on psytrance. Now they are out with the second chapter in their Pure Imagination series. This time it is compiled by Sixsense (Benny Damski), who has collected full on tracks from Israel.

Pure Imagination 2 (Utopia Records) 2005 (UTPCD09)

1. Freaked Frequency – 51 Times
2. Sixsense – The Hive
3. Ananda Shake – Intensity
4. Vibe Tribe – Thriller
5. Freaked Frequency – Panic
6. Sixsense – Fight
7. Aniki (Nissimyani) – Ayawaska Vamos
8. Life Extension – Aaliyah
9. Chemical Drive – Gshok

A duo called Freaked Frequency (Vlada Zounic & Milojko Jaric) starts it all. This is a very fresh duo, and it’s their first release. They give us some drug samples, talking about MDMA, which I find pretty boring. The rest is pure, full on club trance. It actually sounds a lot like Skazi, which should give you a little sign of what it sounds like... Track two is by Sixsense himself. He has released tracks on various compilations, on labels such as Pukka, Spliff Music and YSE. Here he goes quite clubby as usual, but with a catchy, pretty fluffy melody that will for sure hit a big crowd. Quite massive drift, perfect for the early morning hours. Track 3 is by Ananda Shake (Osher Swissa & Lior Edri) who released their debut album (Emotion In Motion) on Utopia Records earlier this year. The track we get here is not on the album. They go the usual uplifting direction too, but with some darker moments in between. Track 4 is by Vibe Tribe (Stas Marnyanski & Elmar Ivatarov) who released their debut album (Melodrama) on Utopia Records last year. I was quite mean in my review of that album because it was just way too simple and commercial sounding for my taste. Well, this track doesn’t convince me of anything else either. The melodies are simple in my ears, and the take offs are so cheap. But, it might hit some kids out there.

Track 5 is another track by Freaked Frequency, who started this compilation. This track is in my opinion not much better than track one. You get some Skazi influences here too, that I find quite annoying. Actually it reminds me a bit of hard house! But, the vocals in this one are not that bad. Track 6 is another track by Sixsense himself. This is a massive, pumping track going a more full on direction. You get some pretty cool melodies in it too. It sounds pretty good, but we get some ugly vocals in there (influenced by Infected Mushroom maybe?) that sort of ruins the track for me. I think it would be much better without the vocals. Track 7 is by a new project called Aniki. This is actually a side project by Nissimyani (Yan Azulai) who is known for two albums on Phonokol. Here we get another fast track (148bpm). We get a pretty stupid voice sample here (repeating the word ayahuasca). The rest goes the usual, very typical Israeli full on direction. This one is less melodic. Track 8 is by Life Extension (Olivier Mirat & Laurent Ihullier), which is a quite fresh duo that has already released tracks on Mind Control, Shiva Space Technology, Transient and MP Records. Here they give us the deepest track on this compilation. Actually one of my favourite tracks here. A pumping, drifting track, without all the cheese. The last track we get here is by Chemical Drive (Ronen Sahar). He has also released tracks on a few full on labels, such as Spliff Music and Transient. This is a groovy, rolling track, which is the darkest one on this compilation, at least the first minutes. It actually reminds me of the style you find on the 3D Vision label. Massive full on that works at night.

On this compilation you find a lot of clubby psytrance tracks as always from the Utopia Records crew, but also a couple of deeper ones. So, if you are into this kind melodic trance that is flooding out of Israel these days, you might check it out.
