Review by PKS
Here comes something for those of you who watched the total eclipse in South-Africa 2002...

Solstice Music in Japan and the Etnicanet crew have just released a new compilation with a view on the total eclipse celebrating in South-Africa 2002. It is compiled by Max Lanfranconi (Etnica).

Eclipse (Solstice Music) 2003 (SOLMC-024)

1. Rinkadink – Kookykaboom (Total Cracken Rmx)
2. Wrecked Machines – Obscure Land
3. Pleiadians – Inner Space
4. Lotus Omega – Skyline (Live Mix)
5. Manmademan – Creation Myth
6. Droidlock Vs. Shirkan – Tuning
7. Soundaholix – Psycircus Rmx
8. Etnica Vs. Wrecked Machines – The Honour (Live Mix)
9. X-Wave & Melicia – Get Ready

First out is the South-Africa based artist Rinkadink. He gives us a total banging night time trance track. Minimal, hard banging rhythms, just like the Etnica guys have fallen in love with after they stopped making melodic trance. Track 2 is by Wrecked Machines who released an album (Blink) on Etnicanet Records this year. They also love the new Etnica style, and that’s what they give us. Totally heavy beats, but not much more. Track 3 is something I have been really curios about. A new Pleiadians track! Pleiadians is a great side project of Etnica which is more trippy and more melodic, but we haven’t got any new Pleiadians tracks in a long time. But here we get a taste of their forthcoming album Explorer on Etnicanet Records. This sure is more minimal and stumpy than we are used to from older Pleiadians releases, but you still get some of that trippy Pleiadians feeling with a few melodies. I’m looking forward to the album…

Track 4 is by Brazilian Lotus Omega. They are also into the Etnica style. Very dark trance, with totally heavy, rolling rhythms. Not much melodies to be found here, but just a few psychedelic sounds jumping in the track. Track 5 is a new track by the trance couple Manmademan (P. Baguley and Sonya Bailey). They do it in a hard, minimal, stumpy way this time. Dark, fast trance. Not among the best tracks they have made. Track 6 is by Droidlock in a collaboration with a guy called Shirkan. This is a really pumping, deep track. Full on pumping trance in a minimal way. Reminds me a bit of Parasense. The melodies are there, but they drown a bit in the heavy bass lines. Then we get a more well known track called Psychedelic Circus, but here in a remix done by Soundaholix. Same samples as usual, but with slightly different melodies and a more stumpy style than the original. Then it’s time for more minimal trance, this time by Etnica themselves, here in a collaboration with Wrecked Machines. They have put in a voice sample I recognise from a Hallucinogen track, and you get more variation than most tracks Etnica have released lately. This is actually one of the better Etnica tracks I have heard in a long time! More melodic and crazy sounds. This compilation finishes with a track made by Melicia who released his debut album on Phonokol this year, here in a collaboration with X-Wave (dj Miko). This is finally some melodic morning trance. Pretty nice after eight full on night time stumpers, but it might sound a bit cheesy to some.

If you like the new Etnica style, you will love this, but personally I think there is too little variation in most of these tracks. They think it’s enough with very heavy bass lines, but I disagree. It’s interesting to hear some new Pleiadians stuff again, and the Etnica track was surprisingly good after all the boring stuff these guys have managed to release lately.
