Youth In Dub

Youth has gathered several musicians and created Youth In Dub, released on Liquid Sound Design...

Releases from Liquid Sound Design, the chilled experimental side of Dragonfly Records, are always interesting. This time we get a compilation where Youth has been collaborating with a lot of different musicians, and created Youth In Dub. Inside the cover of this compilation, you also get a little booklet with poems written by Youth himself.

Youth In Dub (Dragonfly Records) 2003 (BFLCD67)

1. Celtic Ragas – Bjhanji (Youth Remix)
2. Clive de Carle presents The New World Orchestra – Tea Time In Bengal
3. Youth Vs. Coldcut – Sahara Orchid Dub
4. Abakus – California Sunshine
5. United States Of Dub – Tiger Moon
6. Kumba Mela Experience Feat. Brother Culture – Junkie Deluxe
7. Pitch Black – Melt (Youth Remix)
8. Brother Culture – Turn It Around (Youth Remix)
9. Kumba Mela Experience Feat. Brother Culture – Peace & Love (Groove Corporation Remix)

The first track is originally made by a group called Celtic Raga, who obviously like Celtic music. Youth has remixed it. A track with mostly organic instruments, mainly violin in a very Celtic way. You have to be a little musically open minded to like this. Track 2 is a collaboration between several musicians, including Youth. Here you get a lot of vocals by an Indian singer, sitar etc. Again very organic. Track 3 is surprisingly a collaboration between Youth and Coldcut (those Ninja Tune guys…). This track is more deep and dubby, with some slow jazzy vibes. Track 4 is a track by Abakus (Russell T. Davies) where Youth actually is not involved. This is a very relaxing track with some beautiful Indian vocals (by Ranajit Sengupta). There is also some relaxing guitar in there, relaxed melodies and slow dubby rhythms. Best track on this compilation so far.

Track 5 starts with a bit more electronic sounds. Then comes a down tempo rhythm going faster than most other tracks on this compilation. It is made by a group called United States Of Dub, which are Youth and a guy named Michael Kang. You get that tribal feeling in this one too, some spoken words, guitar and a lot of bass. Track 6 is a mix between the Kumba Mela Experiment by Youth and the reggae group Brother Culture. Here you get Ethnic vocals and deep, groovy rhythms mixed with reggae vocals. Track 7 is by a group called Pitch Black, but here remixed by Youth. Pretty cool track, with deep dub rhythms, and some dark swirling sounds echoing. Track 8 is another track by Brother Culture, here remixed by Youth. This has almost a housy rhythm tempo. The last track on this compilation is another collaboration between Brother Culture and Youth’s Kumba Mela Experiment, but remixed by Groove Corporation. This is very reggae influenced, with a lot of vocals. A very happy vibe on this one. At last you also get some sort of hidden track, with mostly Indian sitar.

This compilation is surprisingly organic, pretty different from most other releases on Liquid Sound Design. For me the reggae influences and lack of electronic sounds become a bit over the top, but if you want something different and like reggae dub, you should check this out.
