Dino Psaras is out with his first solo album on Greek Oktava Records...
|
Dino Psaras is a veteran in psytrance music making. He is most known for being a member of Cydonia and Tortured Brain, and for running Atomic Records. He has played as a dj and live all over the world for several years. The last couple of years he has performed just under his own name, Dino Psaras. Finally, five years after his Cydonia album, he now releases his solo album under the name Dino Psaras, called Lick it on Greek Oktava Records. This album was released at Samothraki Dance Festival 2003 in the end of august. Oktava Records is sort of a label owned by the organisers of Samothraki Dance Festival. He also played as a dj and live at the festival.

Many people think of dark trance when they hear the name Dino Psaras. He sure has started to make some lighter music again after the Cydonia album, but first out on this album is a pretty dark track. Smashing heavy rhythms and dark sounds. Full on all the way. Track 2 starts much lighter, with beautiful melodic sounds and a nice banging rhythm drift. Most of the track is really nice, but after a few minutes we get a melody I think sounds way too cheesy. Too bad that a melody like that can ruin a great track. Track 3 is a really fast, dark stumper. Some heavy melodies and scary voice samples. This one reminds me much more of the Cydonia style. A really cool track. Track 4 has even heavier rhythms. Totally stumpy trance that sounds pretty minimal. Very dark all the way through. Track 5 starts with some tribal rhythms, before the stumping rolling beats comes back. Again it sounds pretty minimal, but with full on rhythms. In the middle of the track, we suddenly get a cool female voice in the background, and the track becomes more varied.
Track 6 starts banging from the first second. Fast going trance with a few voice samples. After a while you get a melody that sounds a lot like some old hard trance melodies. Reminds me a bit of a few Tortured Brain tracks too. I think some of these melodies sounds way too cheesy! Track 7 is the cheesiest track on this album. Euro dance melodies mixed with heavy psytrance rhythms. Why, why, why?!?!? This is like hearing Tiesto on the radio or something. Track 8 sounds much better. In this one he has cut out the crap, and added psychedelic sounds instead. Good for us! A stumpy track with several cool sounds. The last track reminds me of Skazi, with some easy dark melodies, take offs, and fast going rhythms. Not my cup of tea.
This album wasn`t as good as I expected. There are a few good tracks here, but several of these tracks could have been much better in my opinion. Why not cut out those cheesy melodies, and ad something twisted like before?
