Phantasm Records is finally back, this time with the debut album of Eskimo....
|
One of the best quality psytrance labels out there, Phantasm Records haven`t released anything the last year. But, finally they are out with a new album! This time, it is the debut album by Eskimo. Eskimo is dj Junya, which is the son of John Phantasm (also a member of Mindfield)!! Junya is only 17 years old, but has already been making music for several years. He has shown great production skills, and has played all over the world already.
Eskimo “ Can You Pick Me Up?” Phantasm Records 2003 (PTMCD148)
1. The Scorpion
2. Traveling

9. Can You Pick Me Up?
When Phantasm release something, I always expect something fresh and more psychedelic than most other trance labels. The first track is a really drifting heavy track. Reminds me a bit of Orion. Sort of the Alien Project drift, but with more sounds and variation. The sounds he puts in here are really great. He has also put in some of those old 303 sounds, which really fit in well together with a nice trancey melody. Track 2 is a real stumper. Unbelievable pleasant sounds, great bass lines and nice breaks. The psychedelic melody in the middle of the track is really trippy, and the build ups at the end make it to a great party track. Track 3 (Does this look Infected to you?) actually sounds a bit like Infected Mushroom in the beginning. There are also some melodies in it that reminds me of them, but the rhythm drift is different. The track varies with different themes through the track. Nice one! Skazi made a sort hit last year called Fire On Ice. Here we get an Eskimo remix of it. I think the original sounds too much like some simple hard house. The remix we get here is in my opinion slightly better than the original, but it is far away from the best tracks on this album. Same rolling bass lines as many of the other tracks, but these hard house sounds isn`t my thing.
Things get a bit better in track 5 (Dirty trancing). This one has a really hard bass line. It sounds a bit like Skazi this on too, but the melodies are better in this one in my opinion. Track 6 starts really nice with some kind of flute sound. Then the pushing rhythm starts rolling. Some trippy sounds and melodies build up the track. This is one of my favourites on this album. The melody in this one reminds me a bit of the good old goa melodies. Great track! Track 7 doesn`t let us down either. A nice stumpy track with new and old influences, great melodies, catchy bass line, funny samples and beautiful sounds. Track 8 reminds me a bit of new Hallucinogen tracks, because of the melody and some of the rhythm parts. The last track on this surprisingly good album is also obviously inspired by Hallucinogen. You get those nice trippy melodies, and some Hallucinogen alike stumpy rhythms. Great finish!
Eskimo give you nine fresh tracks for the dance floor. You can be sure that all these tracks will be played at a lot of festivals around the world this summer. Eskimo is definitely an upcoming star in the psytrance scene, so watch out! It is also great news that Phantasm Records is back on the field.
