Ypsilon5 "Binary Sky"

Top level Music reviews Psytrance reviews

Tranceform Records in Finalnd is out with their third release. They are as usual focusing on the melodic side of trance. Now they are out with the debut album by Ypsilon5 (David Lilja) from Sweden. He has previously released a track on the Blissful Moments compilation on Tranceform Records last year.

Tranceform Records and Ypsilon5 sure loves the older melodic Goa trance style that most other psytrance artists have moved away from. But it’s nice to see that some artists still hold on to the melodic vibes. First out is a really hypnotic track. Totally melodic with atmospheric, floating melodies all the way through. The bass line is pumping like in the "old days", and it sounds just like a lot of the psytrance that came out of Israel in the mid 90’s. Track 2 goes a little bit darker, but holds on to the hypnotic melodic goa style. You also get some vocal samples in there. All these tracks reminds me a lot of artists like Ra and Dimension 5, so if you still like their music, you will for sure enjoy this album too. Track 3 starts with a chilled, floating vibe, before we get some chilled dubby rhythms together with Arabic influences. After a while the ethnic effects goes over to pure pumping melodic trance again, perfect for the morning. If you like the early releases by Astral Projection, you should check this out.

Track 5 is an older track, and yes, another old school melodic track. Very stumping rhythms and a more massive sound picture than the other tracks on this album. Definately my favourite track on this album. Track 5 (Paranormal) was originally released on the Blissful Moments compilation on Tranceform Records last year. This is a very drifting track, full of light melodies, just like the old days. Track 6 is one of the most melodic tracks on this album. A very happy track with an atmospheric, floating vibe in the background. The last track on this album is a beautiful chilled track. Totally floating melodies with some deep, dubby beats above. Great finish on the album.

These tracks might sound a little outdated to some people, but this album is perfect for those of you who miss the melodic Goa period 1994-97, and want something new and fresh in that category.
