Bio-Tonic "On The Rox"

Top level Music reviews

French Bio-Tonic is out with their second album. Their first album Elektrik Colors came only in Japan on Solstice Music in 2001. They became popular over there pretty fast, because of their new hard pumping style combined with spacey melodies. Bio-Tonic are Julien Lecoq, Jerome Lecoq and Julien Brizard. Their new album is released on Solstice in Japan and on Solstice International here in Europe.

I have to say that I`m really impressed by all these beautiful Solstice cover arts! The first track starts nice and floating, but after a few minutes a stupid voice shouts out something and the rhythms starts pushing. This voice reminds me of some bad euro dance song like Scooter or something. But away from that, this track is pretty cool. They have mixed in some funky guitar too, but this Scooter voice ruins the whole thing. Track 2 is better. The usual hard banging Bio-Tonic rhythm, but here you get much more psychedelic melodies and sounds than we got in their first album. Track 3 sounds a bit more like their first album, with mostly very hard, stumpy rhythms, but at the end you get a crazy melody in this one too. Track 4 starts darker, but after a couple of minutes, we get a beautiful female vocal into the track, and then the melody follows on.

Track 5 is one of my favourite tracks on this album. Very drifting, with cool voice samples, some crazy psychedelic sounds and pushing rhythms. Fantastic track! Track 6 is more melodic, from beginning to end. This reminds me a lot of old melodic goa trance, but in a modern way. Seems like melodies are back again in psytrance! Track 7 goes about the same direction, with cool melodies, Asian voices and drifting rhythms. Track 8 is the last trance track on this album. This is a remix of the 3rd Link track, released on their first album Elektrik Colors. I think this version is better than the first one. More psychedelic melodies and sounds. The two last tracks on this album, are chill out tracks. Bio-Tonic proved in their first album that they are pretty good at making psyambient too. The psyambient we get here is really beautiful melodic down tempo chill.

This album is much better than their first album. This will for sure be one of the better albums of 2003.
